Having experimented with different paints, adding white to create paler tints, and greys  to produce more muted colours and mixing complementary colours to get a variety of greys and browns, the following are examples of matching colours to a fabric.

This was an enjoyable exercise, occasionally frustrating when the wet paint dried to a slightly different hue than expected.
